SIBU: Wong Ching Yong will be sworn in as the deputy chairman of Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) on Aug 10.

In announcing this, SRDC chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai said the venue for the swearing-in would be known later.

“We are looking for the place these few days. We also invite the Minister of Local Government and Housing Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian to witness the ceremony. We want to make sure that it is a good start for Wong.

“Our council including councillors and staff will give fullest cooperation to him. After swearing-in and acceptance of office, I will allocate the council’s three portfolios which were left by the previous deputy chairman Senator Robert Lau Hui Yew,” he told reporters during a courtesy call by Wong at his office here yesterday.

Sempurai said the three portfolios to be held by Wong will be as chairman of the Standing Committee of Business and Financing, chairman of the sub-committee of Asset and Management or Investment and vice chairman of standing committee for Development Planning, Finance and Resource Management.

“I hope with the coming of Wong together with me, we can work together. As I have known Wong very well, I hope this good relationship between two of us can go forward to give better and proper service to the people under the council’s jurisdiction.

“Of course, now we are facing a lot of issues especially on Covid-19 and rabies, hopefully we will be more focused,” he said.

Another thing to look into is infrastructure development which still needs a lot of work to be done, he added.

Currently, he said, there is much room for improvement especially on infrastructure and maintenance as well as other municipal services.

“Hopefully with the new deputy chairman, we can have a lot of ideas to bring up,” Sempurai added.

Wong thanked the state government for the appointment, saying it showed the state government had much confidence in Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP). He also extended his gratitude to SUPP president Dr Sim for recommending him to take up the post.

Meanwhile, he said he shared a similar view with Sempurai on integrity in SRDC.

“We will be very strict with stamping out corruption and hope all councillors and staff will observe the guidelines on financial procedures as well as tenders,” Wong added.
