Covid-19: 13 new positive cases recorded in Malaysia, two new clusters identified

KUCHING (Aug 9): Malaysia recorded 13 new positive Covid-19 cases today, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 9,083, said Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Out of the 13, nine were imported cases with one foreigner and one local who came into the country from China; one foreigner and one local from India; one local from Ireland; one local from Japan; and one foreigner from Indonesia were detected in Kuala Lumpur, while one foreigner from Japan was detected in Selangor and one local from Yemen was detected in Sarawak.

The four local transmissions involved three locals and one foreigner in Penang and Putrajaya respectively and involved two Malaysians from the Sivagangga Cluster, one Malaysian from Kurau Cluster and one foreigner from Meranti Cluster.

He also announced the emergence of two new clusters today, Kurau and Meranti.

“For the Kurau Cluster, two positive cases were detected, and we have screened 115 close contacts. 106 were negative while another nine are awaiting result. Active case detection and close contact screening is still being carried out.”

“For the Meranti Cluster, a healthcare worker tested positive on Aug 8. The worker had close contact with a pre-operation screening patient who tested positive. Close contact screening and active case detection is still being carried out and 15 people have been screened. The source of this cluster is still being investigated.”

On the current status of the Sivagangga Cluster, Dr Noor Hisham said that 4,636 people had been screened as of Aug 9 at 12pm, with 45 who tested positive.

In Kedah, 4,078 people were screened with 31 testing positive, 4,020 tested negative while another 27 are awaiting results. In Perlis, 390 people were screened with 11 testing positive and the rest awaiting test result. In Penang, 168 peple were tested with three positive, 85 negative and 80 still awaiting results, he said.

He said close contact tracing and active case detection is still underway, and preventive steps such as disinfection have been taken in areas identified to be related to this cluster.

Meanwhile, nine people have recovered and discharged today, bringing the number of discharge to 8,784 cases, with recovery rate of 96.71 per cent. One patient is still being treated in the intensive care unit (ICU) who did not require ventilator support.

There were no new deaths reported and death toll stands at 125, he said.
