KUCHING: The flexibility given to the automotive industry during Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) has positively impacted the sale of used imported vehicles, says Association of Malay Importers and Traders of Motor Vehicles Malaysia (Pekema) Sarawak branch president Tan Sri Abang Khalid Abang Marzuki.

Although the demand and sale of used imported vehicles were initially slow, companies under Pekema are bouncing back to pre-Covid-19 days.

“We are very grateful for the government incentives and assistance like National Economic Recovery Plan (Penjana) announced by the Prime Minister in June, with reduction of sales tax from 10 to 5 per cent until Dec 31,” he told thesundaypost yesterday.

He added that during Movement Control Order vehicle sales dropped 92 per cent in April compared to March.

In May, sales picked up to 79 per cent to hit almost 90 per cent in June and July which is a positive sign for Pekema member companies and the national economy.

“Pekema hopes that this situation will continue and get better than before the Covid-19 pandemic which forced all businesses to be temporarily closed to curb the spread of the virus. We also believe that the recovery of imported vehicle sale is influenced by the assistance of Computerized Vehicle Inspection Center (Puspakom) which expedites vehicle inspection,” he concluded.
