KUCHING: The 10th Royal Ranger Regiment (10 RRD) thwarted an attempt to smuggle out 120 cartons of various brands of beer through Serikin near the Sarawak-Kalimantan border yesterday.

According to a press statement from the First Division Infantry, the incident happened at around 5am when a group of seven 10 RRD men led by Corporal Henry Jamit conducting Op Awas in Serikin area saw a vehicle heading towards an illegal entry point at the Indonesian border.

“When the vehicle was stopped and searched, it was found that two local men, one on a motorcycle and the driver of the vehicle, tried to smuggle the beers to a neighbouring country and they were detained,” said the statement yesterday.

The smuggling attempt was reported to the 10 RRD commanding officer Lt Col Rashidi Ghazali before the seized items including mobile phones, a motorcycle and a van, valued at about RM23,600, were brought to the Bau Police Station for further actions.

The press statement also said, through Op Benteng, the armed forces would continue to be vigilant and strengthen surveillance along the border to prevent any incident that could disrupt the security and sovereignty of the country, especially cross-border crime.
