KOTA SAMARAHAN: Residents here will get to know their waste collection schedules through signboards to be put up soon by Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS).

Its chairman Datuk Peter Minos said the signboards would be put up at strategic locations in the council jurisdiction. The signboards will also show the contact numbers of the contractors involved.

“The public will be able to direct their complaints to the contractors if their waste is not collected on schedule.

“We are doing this so that the residents can either call the scavenging contractors or MPKS if collection schedules are not adhered to.

“MPKS will strictly enforce the collection rule based on the contract terms between MPKS and the contractors,” he said.

He said the basic idea behind this initiative was to improve scavenging services performance in Kota Samarahan.

He also said the council had received feedback from local residents that waste collection was a big issue, especially in the residential areas.

Minos also expressed his hope that Kota Samarahan folk could emulate the Japanese for keeping their cities and districts clean.

“We can do it. It all depends on the efficient municipal services and the people’s culture of making cleanliness as their way of life.”

Minos went on a study tour of Tokyo (Japan) last year.
