SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) will establish guidelines concerning the burning of paper money and joss sticks at the roadside during the Ghost Festival from next year.

This was announced by Its chairman Clarence Ting when he met reporters at the mess caused by such activities at Palawan traffic light open space yesterday.

“Like in Kuching, the council … they allowed people to come to apply for permit to do this but at the designated area given by council.”

“So I think we should follow that…rather than especially those temples or believers doing this all over the place, especially at the main road.

“That is why…from next year onward, I think council should look into this matter, he said.

“So … at least if we give them permit, the temple felt that it is good that we recognize this sort of festival annually,” he added.

The SMC, he continued, should address the issue so that people would not engage in such activities anywhere with no one to clean up  the unsightly mess caused.

Also present was the president of United Chinese Association (UCA) Sibu Division Ngieng Ping Sing.
