Classes at 10 primary schools in Sibu disrupted by floods

SIBU: Ten primary schools here could not run classes yesterday due to floods, said Sibu District Education Officer Ahli Chikba.

He said the Sibu District Education Office (PPD) is still monitoring the flood situation to assess whether the 10 affected primary schools could operate today.

The 10 affected schools were SK Tanjung Latap, SJK Chung Ung, SJK (C) Hang Kwong, SJK (C) Yong Shing, SJK (C) Kwong Kok, SK Nanga Assan, SK Sungai Salim, SK Nanga Salim, SK Nanga Pak and SJK (C) Sing Ming.

“These schools could not operate mainly because the main access roads leading to the schools were inundated.

“The Sibu District Education Office (PPD) is still monitoring the situation to access whether these schools could operate tomorrow (today),” Ahli told The Borneo Post when contacted yesterday evening.

Meanwhile, Sibu Resident Charles Siaw  said seven schools in Kanowit were not operating yesterday due to floods.

They were SJK Yok Ming, SJK Shin Hua, SJK Ming Wok, SJK Shing Kok, SJK Chih Mong, SK Nanga Poi and SK Rantau Kemiding.

The other two schools, namely SK Ulu Bawan and SJK Sing Shing were operating as usual despite being inundated, said Siaw, who is Sibu Division Disaster Management Committee chairman.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department has forecast isolated thunderstorms for Sibu district from today till Sept 13.

No rain is forecast for this morning but isolated thunderstorm and isolated rain forecast for the afternoon and night respectively.
