The lorry and the damaged motorcycle are seen at the scene of the fatal accident.

KUCHING: A motorcyclist and her pillion rider were killed in a head-on collision with a lorry at KM13 Kota Samarahan-Mambong road around 11.10am yesterday.

Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu identified the motorcyclist as Hazel Martin, 18, and the male pillion rider as Lee Kim Lung, 24.

Both victims were from Kampung Sungai Riset,  Kuching-Serian road.

“Initial investigations showed that Hazel was overtaking a vehicle in front of her when she collided head-on with a lorry that was heading to Kota Samarahan from Siburan,” Alexson said in a statement yesterday.

The impact of the collision threw Lee off the motorcycle and into the path of a car heading towards Siburan from Kota Samarahan.

Hazel and the motorcycle were pinned underneath the lorry and dragged for several metres before the lorry finally came to a stop after crashing into an earth drain by the roadside.

“The lorry driver, a 47-year-old male, and the car driver, a 28-year-old male, were not physically injured in the accident,” said Alexson.

Hazel and Lee were both pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. Their bodies were later transferred to the Sarawak General Hospital’s (SGH) mortuary for further action.

In another incident yesterday, a pedestrian was killed after being hit by a motorcycle near the Balai Ringin wet market at KM90 Kuching-Sri Aman road around 6am.

Alexson said the deceased, Awang Jalani Awang Zain, 54, died from serious injuries to his head and body.

“The deceased, who also suffered a broken left leg from the accident, was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel from the Balai Ringin Health Clinic,” he said.

It is understood that the deceased darted across the road and was run over by a motorcycle, which was heading towards Sri Aman from Serian.

The motorcyclist, a 19-year-old from Kampung Ensebang, who does not have a valid motorcycle licence, sustained light injuries to his arms and legs.

Awang Jalani’s body was later transported to the Serian Hospital mortuary.

Separately on Tuesday (Sept 8), an 81-year-old pillion rider died from serious injuries to her body after she and her husband were involved in an accident with a car in Lundu around 3.20pm.

Alexson said the deceased was identified as Erim Suut from Kampung Pueh, Sematan.

Her 83-year-old husband is currently receiving treatment for serious injuries at SGH.

“It is believed that the motorcycle failed to stop at the Pueh-Telok Melano road intersection when it collided with a car that was driven by a 26-year-old male,” said Alexson.

The car was heading to Telok Melano from Lundu while the motorcycle was exiting a junction from Kampung Pueh, he said.

The driver from Samariang Aman did not sustain any injuries from the accident.

Erim’s remains were later transferred to the SGH mortuary.

All three cases are being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
