MIRI: A mural depicting multiracial and multicultural Sarawakians is a new attraction for the Miri Handicraft Centre.

It was painted by local artists Noel Belulok and his son Lawrence Noel, Meges Laoi, Bill Suut, Abdul Rahman Han, and Putit Pikok.

They started the project on Aug 20 and completed it on Sept 15.

Costing RM18,000, the mural funded by the Miri City Council (MCC) measures 33 metres by 3.5 metres.

Miri Mayor Adam Yii said the mural seeks to highlight unity among the various races here as well as the rich and unique cultures.

“The mural focuses on five elements namely culture, ethnicity, tourism-spots, as well as flora and fauna,” he said during the mural’s launching by federal Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri on Thursday.

Among those present were Minister of Transport Datuk Lee Kim Shin; Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Sebastian Ting; Telang Usan assemblyman and Sarawak Tourism Board chairman Dennis Ngau; and Sibuti MP Lukanisman Awang Sauni.

The centre is open from 8am to 6pm daily.
