KUCHING (Sept 30): Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) will announce stricter regulations on admission procedures for travellers to the state tomorrow (Oct 1).

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who is also SDMC chairman, said this measure was necessary to protect Sarawak from more imported Covid-19 cases.

Speaking at the daily Covid-19 update today, he said Sarawak’s situation was as if it was “surrounded by a ring of fire”, in reference to the high number of Covid-19 cases in neighbouring countries and states.

He said one of those countries was the Philippines, which recorded 2,015 new cases and 309,3030 total Covid-19 cases as of Sept 29.

He also said other countries and states surrounding Sarawak with high Covid-19 cases as of Sept 29 included Indonesia (4,002 new cases; 282,724 total cases), Singapore (23 new cases; 57,742 total cases), Sabah (73 new cases; 1,843 total cases) and Brunei (0 new case; 146 new cases).

“The SDMC today held a emergency meeting today after taking note of the daily rise in Covid-19 cases outside Sarawak.

“Therefore, SDMC has come up with a strategy to protect the state from continually receiving imported cases from outside Sarawak. These stricter steps regarding admission procedures to Sarawak will be announced tomorrow (Oct 1),” he said.
