SIBU: Fifteen couples registered their marriage at Mingchiang Tunhion Huay Sibu Association yesterday.

According to marriage registrar Moh Siew Ngiik, this was the most number of couples she has registered so far. To accommodate the couples, the registration session was divided into morning and afternoon sessions.

“This morning (Friday) we started at 8.30am until 12.30pm. We had nine couples in the morning. Then in the afternoon we continued at 2pm to register the remaining couples,” she told reporters when met.

According to Moh, couples intending to get married have to go for pre-marriage counselling and she noted that young couples like to have their marriage registered on special dates like yesterday.

Simon Ling, 31 and Dr Deborah Tiong, 29, a dentist said they chose 10.10 as it is easy to remember.

“I’m really thankful to register our marriage at this association,” she said and Ling added that they have to postpone their wedding reception originally planned for November.

“We have to reschedule it. My friends from overseas are unable to come and it is also not convenient currently,” said Ling.

Meanwhile, schoolteachers Yong Kai Siong and Wong Chu Sing also chose the easy to remember date which was also a public holiday.

The couple who teach at SMK Selirik, Kapit have been together for two years and look forward to life as married couple. Due to Covid-19 pandemic, they would not be holding their wedding ceremony this year.

“I really hope that it would be over soon. We are planning to hold our wedding reception during Chinese New Year next year,” added Yong.
