Sikie arrives at Sg Ayam, Ulu Anap in Tatau for the gathering of local community leaders.

BINTULU: The ownership transfer of a shotgun from parents to their children should be done while the owners who are still living, says Assistant Minister of Native Laws and Customs Datuk John Sikie Tayai.

He said transferring ownership would be much easier in the presence of the shotgun owner.

Sikie said this in response to an explanation by Bintulu Resident Jack Aman Luat and Tatau police chief DSP Dennis Bunyam on the possession of a shotgun during a gathering with the Tatau District Community Leaders Association (KMKK) at Sungai Ayam, Ulu Anap, in Tatau on Wednesday.

He hoped local community leaders and longhouse chiefs would share the information to their people in the longhouses.

Sikie who is Kakus assemblyman praised the efforts made by Bintulu Resident and Tatau, Sebauh and Bintulu District Offices in developing the Electronic Firearms Application Tracking System (e-FATS) which was entered in a competition organised by the Creative and Innovative Group (KIK) Sarawak Public Service last October.

“This system can facilitate or overcome any problem related to transferring ownership or renewal of a shotgun licence,” he said.

The e-FATS assist the applicants and the relevant authorities to record and track the movement of application forms for changing the name of the owner for a shotgun together with all necessary supporting documents to be quick reference.

Meanwhile, Jack highlighted the important role played by the local community leaders at grassroots level to ensure the residents at the community level comply with the standard operating procedure (SOP) to stop the spread of Covid-19 virus.

“Community leaders are also mediators between the people and the government especially in explaining the latest government policies,” he said.

Jack said the main purpose of setting up an association for the community leaders is to establish greater cooperation.

“If there are any problems, it can be brought into discussion within the association and together finding a solution,” he added.

Pemanca Gerosen Jubin said the gathering aimed to strengthen friendship and cooperation among members of the KMKK Tatau District and the government agencies.

He added the association also wanted to promote the Sungai Anap area as an ecotourism destination.

“Some places here seem to be interesting, clear river and beautiful waterfalls such as Wong Sunan, Wong Adai, and Bukit Kana,” he added.

Gerosen hoped the government would provide an allocation for the construction of a road to Bukit Kana and build chalets for tourists.

Also present at the event were Tatau District officer Barayan Lenya, Tatau Fire and Rescue Department chief Jankey Jikat, KMKK Tatau District chairman Penghulu Sanok Magai and over 100 longhouse chiefs.
