See Hua Group bags 30 awards at the 32nd Kenyalang Journalism Awards

KUCHING (Nov 7): The See Hua Group of newspapers comprising The Borneo Post, Utusan Borneo and See Hua Daily News bagged nine gold, eight silver and 13 bronze awards in the 32nd Sarawak Kenyalang Journalism Awards.

The Borneo Post made a clean sweep of the Digital Economy Journalism category with Marilyn Ten Sheau Inn taking the top prize with her entry “Helping small rural farmers via e-marketplace” while Sharon Kong was second with “Sarawak’s digital updates in 2019” and Ronnie Teo finished third with “Covid-19’s push on digital banking”.

Marilyn also won the bronze in the Sustainability Journalism category and Irene C was second in this category.

Mohamad Ghaz Ghazali led another Borneo Post clean sweep in the Business and Economic Journalism with his article “Going social” whereas Sharon Kong and Ronnie Teo were second and third with their entries “Eye on Sarawak’s export hurdles” and “Resolving Malaysia’s Airport Conundrum” respectively.

Sharon Kong collected another prize – a bronze – in Feature and News Feature.

Miri-based reporter Jude Peter Toyat was adjudged the gold winner in the entry “A quest to revive the long-forgotten Tapi” for the Community Well-Being and Rural Development Journalism category while Jacqueline Radoi David took the bronze with her entry titled “Autism – Moving from awareness to acceptance”.

Jacqueline, who is KJSA president, entered her Iban article “Orang autisma patut ulih diterima sama belia dalam komuniti”, winning her the gold award in the Iban Journalism – Feature & News Feature category.

In the Sports Reporting English category, Ting Tieng Hee grabbed the top honours with his entries “Strong arm girl Abigail eyes international title” and Abigail makes international breakthrough”.

Philip Wong Sing Hee completed a Borneo Post one-two finish with his three-part series on rugby development in Sarawak.

The News Reporting category saw Ronnie winning the silver award and Cindy Lai Pek Sian taking the bronze.

In the Bahasa Melayu section, Utusan Borneo’s Agnes Tugong won the gold in the Business and Economic Journalism.

She also picked up a bronze in the Digital Economy Journalism.

Dicky Jawa Ding brought home two gold awards won in the News Reporting and Business and Economic Journalism categories while Watt Zachaeus Ngumbang was third in News Reporting, Sudan Ajang second in Sustainability Journalism and third in Feature and News Feature while Dayang Mastura Ismail also won the bronze in Sports Reporting.

The other silver award winner was Steve Annuar in the Digital Economy Journalism.

As for See Hua Daily News, Helen Tang Harn Ling bagged the gold award her entry “Power Couples in sports” and Yew Wang Ting took the silver in the Business and Economic Journalism’

Those who won bronze awards were Hii Kheng Juong (News Reporting), Yew Wang Ting (Sustainability Journalism) and Lo Kuin Sin-Boon Yun Siong (Community Well-being and Rural Development Journalism).

Veteran journalist and writer James Alexander Ritchie was honoured and recognised for his work with the Tokoh Wartawan award.

This year’s Kenyalang Press Awards received a record number of 540 entries from the print and broadcast media.
