Two fatal accidents reported six hours apart

SIBU: Two fatal accidents occurred within six hours of each other here early yesterday morning.

In the first accident, the driver of a pick-up truck died after the truck skidded and hit a roadside tree at Jalan Sungai Bidut about midnight Friday.

District police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit has identified the victim as Irwan Christopher Pandon, 41, from Kampung Siol Kandis,Kuching.

He said Irwan was driving from the direction of Sungei Bidut roundabout towards Igan Bridge when the accident happened.

“Initial investigation showed that the accident occurred when the pick-up truck skidded to the left and hit a roadside tree,” he said in a media statement.

He said paramedics from a hospital here who went to the scene confirmed that he died on the spot. Stanley said the body was sent to Sibu Hospital for a post mortem.

The case would be investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

The second incident involved a motorcyclist identified as Nur Hafifi Hafis Zakaria, 29, from Jalan Abang Amin, Bintangor.

He is believed to have died on the spot in a hit-and-run accident at Jalan Salim Stabau yesterday morning.

Civil Defence Force spokesperson said they received a distress call at 5.27am yesterday and immediately rushed to the scene.

“When we arrived, we saw the victim was lying on the ground,” he said in a media statement.

He said their initial investigation revealed that he could have been killed in a hit-and-run accident as he was riding alone.

He said the victim suffered serious head injuries and fractured his right leg and foot.

Paramedics confirmed his death at 6.33am, and body was taken to a hospital for a post mortem.
