Covid-19: New cases hit 156 in Sarawak

KUCHING (Jan 19): Sarawak recorded 156 new cases today, bringing the total cumulative tally to 2,367 cases, said the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).

Sibu recorded the most cases at 65, followed by Miri (28), Kanowit (24), Beluru (15), Sarikei (10), Sebauh (three); two each in Kuching, Bintulu and Subis; and one each in Dalat, Belaga, Meradong, Samarahan dan Daro.

There were no fatalities reported today leaving the death toll at 21.

Uggah said that in Sibu, 33 cases were linked to the Pasai Cluster while 26 other cases were detected from screenings at various health centres in the Sibu district. Six other cases were detected from health officers, categorising these cases as local infections.

“In Miri, 10 were close contact screenings and these have been classified as local infections while one case was a returnee from a high-risk area, Kuala Lumpur. 17 cases were linked to active clusters in the state, namely six from the Rakut Cluster, five from the Jelita Cluster, five from the Pasai Cluster and one from the Bah Sayap Cluster.

“In Kanowit, 23 cases were linked to the Pasai Cluster while one case was a returnee from a high-risk area,” Uggah added.

The 15 cases in Beluru, 10 cases in Sarikei, two cases in Subis, one case in Dalat, one case in Belaga and one case in Daro were also linked to the Pasai Cluster.

Uggah noted that in Sebauh, two cases involved the Bukit Sekubong Cluster while one case was detected from a community screening done by the Bintulu Division Health Office.

“In Kuching, one case involved the Keranji Tabuan Cluster while one case was an individual who was screened for having Covid-19 symptoms.

“Whereas in Bintulu, one case was a returnee from a high-risk area while one case was a symptomatic individual screening. The case in Meradong was also a screening of a symptomatic individual.

“The case in Samarahan was a screening of an individual who showed signs and symptoms of Covid-19,” he added.
