KUCHING: Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) will extend the electricity discounts under the Perlindungan Ekonomi dan Rakyat Malaysia (Permai) and Bantuan Khas Sarawakku Sayang (BKSS) 5.0 packages, as announced by the federal and state governments, respectively.
In a statement yesterday, the state utilities provider said the discounts would be reflected in electricity bills from Jan 25 onwards.
“Customers who have been billed for their electricity consumption prior to Jan 25 will have their discounts for that period reflected in their electricity bills by March,” it said.
Under BKSS 5.0, about 640,000 customers from domestic, commercial and industrial sectors would receive discounts, ranging from five to 25 per cent, on their electricity bills between Jan 1 and June 30 this year.
These discounts would cost the Sarawak government about RM166.2 million.
According to SEB, six commercial sectors have been identified to receive 15-per cent discount for their electricity consumption from Jan 1 to March 31 this year.
The sectors are hotel operations, theme parks, convention centres, shopping malls, local airline offices and travel and tour agencies.
“Of the 15 per cent, 10 per cent is provided under the federal government’s Permai (package) and five per cent provided under Sarawak government’s BKSS 5.0.
“Although the federal subsidy for these sectors ends in March, the Sarawak government will ensure that these sectors will continue to have 15 per cent discount by topping up the additional 10 per cent subsidy from April to June this year,” it said.
SEB said it had assembled a dedicated taskforce working around the clock to normalise bills to ensure that every customer from the eligible categories would receive their discounts accordingly.
