MIRI:  Over 240 tonnes of used cooking oil are collected monthly from restaurants, food courts, kiosks and schools in Sarawak and Labuan, and shipped out to Australia to be reprocessed as biodiesel.

This includes 20 tonnes of used cooking oil collected from various food outlets here.

“We help to make Miri and other divisions in the state ‘green’ by buying used cooking oil, so as to prevent operators from discharging it into the sinks, where the oil would later be washed out into the drains and polluting the water,” said Lina Kong, managing director of Sekitar Bumi Hijau Sdn Bhd, yesterday.

According to Lina, the used cooking oil are shipped out to Australia using containers.

Sekitar Bumi Hijau is a family business, which takes green environment seriously and ensures that used cooking oil would not be reused, but to be reprocessed as biodiesel.

Lina said before being sent to Australia, the used cooking oil would be stored at the company’s premises on Lot 1249 in Desa Senadin Industrial Zone.

She also said Sekitar Bumi Hijau had been registered with Miri City Council as a legitimate used cooking oil collection company.

She said the company was set up 11 years ago, and was recognised by the Ministry of Education as a collecting agent for used cooking oil from schools.

Lina also said the used cooking could be sent over to Sekitar Bumi Hijau’s centre at Desa Senadin, where it would be purchased at a price of RM1.50 per kilogramme. In addition, parents of students could also drop off their used cooking oil at the school canteens, she added.
