KAPIT: Once again Kapit and neighbouring Song are inundated by rising water following continuous heavy rainfall the past few days.

The water level began to rise rapidly since Monday evening, with certain low lying areas up to 10 feet under water overflowing  Rajang River and its tributaries.

Some houses, roads, longhouses and schools were reported to be inundated by several feet of water.

The Speedboat Jetty in front of Fort Sylvia in Kapit is under several feet of water.

In Kapit, for example, Kampung Muhibbah Bletih, Kampung Baru, Jalan Sesibau, Kapit Express Terminal, the Fort Sylvia Speedboat Jetty and SK Nanga Kain were under several feet of water.

Over in Song, the Song Express Terminal and Song Waterfront Esplanade were also under water.

It was barely four months ago in September last year that Kapit and Song experienced high water level.

Kapit district officer Cerisologo Sabut had a very busy morning yesterday moving around to monitor the flood situation at various flood-prone areas. With him were Pemanca Abang Hamzah Bolhassan and Temenggong Wasli Nor.

They were seen inspecting the level of water and the inundated houses at Kampung Muhibbah Bletih and Kampung Baru near Sungai Kapit. They also inspected the water level at Jalan Sesibau.

When contacted, Tuai Rumah John Ramba informed that the road to their longhouse was under several metres of water.

He said his longhouse used longboats to ferry the people from the longhouse to Jalan Bukit Goram and back to the longhouse.

He said the water level began to rise at his longhouse yesterday. Learning from previous occasions, he said they parked their vehicles along the junction of Jalan Bukit Goram.

Meanwhile, Cerisologo advised the people to be extra careful during the current extreme wet weather and take precautionary measures to ensure their safety.

He informed that the District Disaster Management Committee (Flood) had been activated and was monitoring the situation very closely and administrative officer Mohd Shukri had been appointed as the person to contact.

He said there had been no evacuation exercise yet.
