Worker dies from injuries sustained when trapped in conveyor machine

BINTULU:  A worker was fatally injured after he was trapped in a conveyor machine at a factory in Samalaju Industrial Estate yesterday.

The victim was identified as Niclas Bennet Bugak, 24.

Bintulu police chief Supt Zulkipli Suhaili who confirmed the incident said the victim was extricated from the machine by personnel from Samalaju Fire and Rescue Station, and was later rushed to Bintulu hospital using a company’s vehicle.

However, the victim was pronounced dead by medical personnel upon arrival at the hospital emergency ward, said Zulkipli.

“An inspection at the scene did not find any criminal elements,” he added.

He said according to the victim’s employer who witnessed the incident, the victim was working as usual when he (the victim) got stuck in the conveyor machine.

The case was classified as sudden death.

Personnel from Samalaju Fire and Rescue Station were rushed to the scene upon receiving a distress call at 3.45am.

“Upon arrival at the scene, it was found that a worker was trapped in the factory conveyor machine in a state of unconsciousness,” said Samalaju Fire and Rescue Station chief Hashim Norshidi.

He said the rescuers used a hydraulic telescopic ram to lift the victim onto a stretcher.
