SIBU: Incessant rain since Sunday night has caused several low-lying areas in Kampung Bahagian Jaya Teku here to be inundated.

An observation there yesterday noted among the areas affected were Jalan Bahagian, Lorong Bahagia Tengah 1, Lorong Bahagia Jaya Selatan 2, Jalan Bahagia Selatan, Lorong Bahagia Jaya 7 and Lorong Bahagia Jaya 5.

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has placed a boat at Lorong Bahagia 9B to facilitate villagers’ movement after water level at the lane rose to knee-level.

A resident, Wong Ching Sui, 65, said the water began to rise since 8pm Sunday, which he attributed to the incessant downpour.

“I had to call my children to help move the vehicles to higher ground as water level rose rapidly,” he said.

Siti Nur Fauziah Mohd Buang, 35, recalled that the water level started to rise in front of her house on Sunday night.

This had forced her to move electrical appliances and furniture to higher ground to prevent them from being damaged by the flood.

“The rain did not stop since last night (Sunday) and seeing the water level starting to rise in front of my house, we placed the items on the table,” she said.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) has despatched its personnel to monitor the situation at the village.

Assistant Minister of Local Government and Housing Dr Annuar Rapaee also went there to get a first-hand look at the situation there yesterday morning.
