9,033 arrested for drugs in 2020

SERIAN: Sarawak arrested a total of 9,033 individuals found positive for drugs in 2020 with Kuching, Samarahan and Miri divisions labeled as high risk areas, says National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) Sarawak director Wan Madihi Wan Salleh.

He stated that urine tests were carried out under Section 15 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 3 of the Drug Dependent (Treatment & rehabilitation) Act 1983.

“In 2020, a total of 945 individual were jailed for drug-related offences too,” he stated during the closing ceremony of the state level National Anti-Drugs Celebration held at a hotel here yesterday.

He revealed that as of January 2021, a total of 1,922 Supervised People (Orang Kena Pengawasan – OKP) under the supervision of AADK are undergoing treatment and rehabilitation at district AADKs.

“For January 2021, a total of 124 clients are receiving treatment and undergoing rehabilitation of the Narcotics Addiction Rehabilitation Centre (Puspen) in Kuching by court order while another 19 are receiving voluntary treatment at Cure and Care (C&C) Clinic in Kuching

“We want National Anti-Drug Celebration to be remembered by all so that they can renew their resolution as well as remind everyone of the role and responsibility of all parties in dealing with the drug threat and preventive action,” he said, adding that statistics shows the severity of the drug menace in the state.

Meanwhile Kedup assemblyman Martin Ben who was present during the event thanked ADDK and the Drug Prevention Association of Malaysia (Pemadam) and Serian Resident’s Office for choosing Serian as host for the state level National Anti-Drugs Celebration this year to raise awareness of the danger of drugs.
