Covid-19: 171 new cases, 2 deaths in Sarawak today

KUCHING (Feb 28): Sarawak recorded 171 new Covid-19 cases along with two deaths today, said the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) in a statement.

This brings the total number of positive cases in the state to 9,545 cases and Sarawak’s Covid-19 death toll to 83.

According to SDMC, the 82nd death involved a 78-year-old local woman who was admitted into the Bintulu Hospital after complaining of breathing difficulties.

She was found positive for Covid-19 on Feb 16, and her health continued to deteriorate before she died on Feb 27.

She had existing comorbidities such as high blood pressure, diabetes and kidney failure.

The 83rd death is related to the Pasai Cluster, said SDMC.

It involved an 80-year-old local man who had been admitted into the Sibu Hospital after he was found positive for Covid-19 on Jan 29 following an active case detection (ACD) operation.

His health continued to deteriorate, and he died on Feb 27.

The man had existing comorbidities such as high blood pressure, diabetes and prostate cancer.

As for new cases breakdown according to districts, SDMC said Sibu topped the list with 33 cases today, where 22 were from ACD, 10 from voluntary screenings and one from a patient who experienced symptoms.

Miri district recorded 31 new cases today, where 19 were from ACD, 11 voluntary screenings and one from a symptomatic patient.

In Bintulu District, of the 29 new cases, 22 were from ACD where one of them was classified as Import C who came from Sibu.

Three were from symptomatic patients, three from voluntary screenings where one of them was Import C after returning from Kanowit, and one involving the Rakut Cluster.

Kapit District’s 20 new cases today were from Pasai Cluster (12), Jan Yong Cluster (4), Gelong Cluster (2), one from ACD and one from voluntary screening.

In Betong District, out of its 20 new cases, 15 involved the Jalan Muhibbah Cluster and five from ACD.

Kuching District recorded 15 new cases today where eight were from ACD, three Import B cases after two locals just returned from Kuala Lumpur and one returned from Negeri Sembilan, two involving the Emperoh Jambu Cluster, one Green Road Cluster, and one from voluntary screening.

In Serian District, of the total nine new cases, seven were from ACD where two were from Bintulu, and two involving the Emperoh Jambu Cluster.

Kanowit District’s four new cases were from ACD (2) and symptomatic patients (2), and Beluru District’s two new cases all from the Seruas Cluster.

Meanwhile in Sri Aman, out of its two new cases, one involved the Kejatau Cluster and one from a detained illegal Indonesian immigrant.

One new case in Mabong District involved the Gelong Cluster, one in Bau from ACD, one in Samarahan from ACD, one in Sebauh from a symptomatic patient, one in Julau from a symptomatic patient, and one in Asajaya involving the Emperoh Jambu Cluster.

All in all, 2,364 active cases were being treated in health institutions across the state, where 1,084 were in Sibu Hospital and Covid-19 Quarantine and Low-Risk Treatment Centre (PKRC), Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) and PKRC (374), Bintulu Hospital and PKRC (291), Kapit Hospital and PKRC (192), Sarikei Hospital and PKRC (188), Miri Hospital and PKRC (160), Betong Hospital and PKRC (40) and Sri Aman Hospital and PKRC (35).

On a positive note, 203 cases have recovered and discharged today, where 115 were from Sibu Hospital, SGH (37), Bintulu Hospital (20), Kapit PKRC (17), Miri Hospital (10) and Sarikei Hospital (4).

The total number of recovery cases to date is at 7,064 or 74.01 per cent out of 9,545 cumulative cases in the state to date.

Meanwhile, SDMC also recorded 200 new person-under-investigation (PUI) cases where three were still waiting for their lab test results.

At the same time, 530 new person-under-surveillance (PUS) cases were recorded today, making a total of 6,381 of them being quarantined in 86 hotels and other accommodations across the state.
