Indonesian gets jail time, caning for possessing 0.36 grams of meth

MIRI (May 12): A Magistrates’ Court here today sentenced an Indonesian man to two years and seven months in prison and four strokes of the rotan for possession of drugs.

Magistrate Md Syafique Md Hilmie convicted Hamzah from Sulawesi on his own guilty plea to a charge framed under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The Section provides for a jail term of between two and five years and three to nine strokes of the rotan upon conviction.

Md Syafique ordered for the sentence to run from the date of Hamzah’s arrest on Dec 9 last year.

According to the facts of the case, Hamzah was found in possession of 0.36 grams of methamphetamine during a raid by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department.

He committed the offence on Dec 9, 2020 at around 5.20am at a workers’ quarters in Jalan Kuala Baram.
