Covid-19: Sarawak records 533 new cases, one death

KUCHING (May 14): Sarawak today recorded one death from Covid-19 along with 533 new positive cases, said the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) in a statement.

“A total of 324 or 60.78 per cent of today’s cases were detected in Miri, Kapit, Sibu, Bintulu and Kuching districts,” it said.

The figures brought the total death toll in the state to 215, and the cumulative total of positive cases to 37,654 cases.

The 215th death involved a 60-year-old woman who was admitted to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) to undergo treatment due to complications from cancer.

An rT-PCR swab test was performed May 3 and she was found positive for Covid-19. Her condition deteriorated and she died on May 13. The case had other comorbidities of diabetes and high blood pressure.

Meanwhile, SDMC informed that Miri topped today’s list with 109 new cases followed by Kapit (69), Sibu (58), Bintulu (46), Kuching (42), Belaga (40), Sarikei (28), Selangau (26), Meradong (21), Pakan (18), Kanowit (15), Serian (13), Sebauh (11), Song (7), Sri Aman (7), Tatau (6), Mukah (5), Lubok Antu (4), Bau (2), Pusa (2), Bukit Mabong (1), Subis (1), Julau (1) and Samarahan (1).

“Out of the 533 new cases reported, 38 have showed signs and experiencing symptoms of Covid-19 infection during the screening.

“A total of 439 cases comprised individuals who have been given quarantine orders at designated quarantine centres,” it said.

From the new cases, 380 cases are results of screening individuals who had contact with positive cases, none is symptomatic.

A total of 59 cases are individuals screened from currently active infection clusters and all are asymptomatic.

Meanwhile, 23 cases are from other screenings at healthcare centres and they are asymptomatic as well.

Another 38 cases are from screening symptomatic individuals at healthcare centres.

SDMC said that there were 497 cases of recovery and discharge for the day.

“These cases were from Sibu Hospital and Quarantine and Low-Risk Treatment Centre (PKRC) in Sibu (140), Bintulu Hospital and PKRC under Bintulu Hospital (110), PKRC Betong (51), Miri Hospital and PKRC under Miri Hospital (40), SGH and PKRC under SGH (38), Sarikei Hospital and PKRC under Sarikei Hospital (35), Kapit Hospital and PKRC under Kapit Hospital (30), Sri Aman Hospital and PKRC Sri Aman (26), PKRC Serian (15), and PKRC Mukah (12).

“As of today, 30,885 or 82.02 per cent of total cases have recovered and discharged,” it said.

SDMC said that a total of 6,474 cases are still being treated at hospitals and various PKRC throughout the state.

There were 534 new Person-Under-Investigation (PUI) reported for the day. This brought the cumulative total of PUIs to 50,845 to-date.

As for Person-Under-Surveillance (PUS), there were 542 individuals who have checked into designated quarantine centres for their compulsory quarantine today. This brings the total of current PUS to 7,089 individuals at 104 hotels and non-hotel quarantine centres statewide.

To-date, those who have completed their quarantine period numbered at 102,426.
