PUTATAN: About 30 water village houses at Kampung Meruntum were destroyed in a fire here Saturday evening.

Thick black smoke was seen billowing all the way from Bukit Kionsom in Inanam.

Although no casualties were reported as at press time, it was reported that three firefighters sustained injuries when they came into contact with electrical wires while putting out the fire.

State Fire and Rescue Department Director Mohd Ali Ismail, when met at the scene, said the injured personnel were taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital I and II.

“They are in stable condition, two are being treated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital I, while one at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital II,” he said.

Mohd Ali said their Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) team gave early treatments to their injured personnel at the scene.

About 25 firefighters from Sembulan and Penampang were deployed to control the blaze.

“We managed to control the flame about 45 minutes later and control the blaze by 8pm.

“We are still investigating the cause of the fire and total loss,” he said.

The fire was believed to have started from one of the houses at around 5.30pm and spread quickly as most of the houses were built close together.

This is the second fire incident reported in Putatan. Last month 17 houses along Jalan Lok Kawi Lama / Kampung Dumpil were destroyed in a fire

Kampung Meruntum, which has a population of about 1,795 villagers, was recently placed under the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) from April 13 until April 26 after five positive Covid-19 cases were recorded.
