Covid-19: 5 deaths, 706 new cases in Sarawak

KUCHING (June 4):

Sarawak today recorded five deaths from Covid-19 along with 706 new positive cases, said the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) in a statement.

Two deaths were recorded in Sibu, while the other three were from Kuching, Sri Aman and Miri.

SDMC added that a total of 395, or 55.95 per cent, of today’s new cases were detected in Kuching, Sibu and Miri districts with all three districts recording triple-digit cases.

The figures brought the total death toll in the state to 316, and the cumulative total of positive cases to 49,920 cases.

The 312th death was a 56-year-old man who was found unconscious at home by family members. He showed no vital signs when the medical team arrived at his home and was confirmed dead on May 31. He was taken to Sri Aman Hospital for forensic investigation. The rT-PCR test conducted on June 1 was found positive. He had comorbidities of hypertension, dyslipidemia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

The 313th death involved a man aged 49 who was also found unconscious at home by family members and was also lifeless when medical team reached his house. He was confirmed dead on June 1 and was taken to Sibu Hospital for forensic investigation. The rT-PCR test conducted on June 2 was positive. He had comorbidity of liver disease.

The 314th death was a 69-year-old man who was admitted to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) after his rT-PCR test at a private hospital on May 29 was found positive. He experienced symptoms of appetite loss and lethargy for the past two days. His condition worsened and he was confirmed dead on June 3. He had comorbidities of hypertension, dyslipidemia and heart disease.

The 315th death was a man aged 43 who sought treatment at Sibu Hospital for shortness of breath. He started experiencing symptoms of fever, cough and difficulty in breathing four days before. The rT-PCR test conducted on May 19 was positive. His condition deteriorated and he was confirmed dead on June 3. He had comorbidity of gout.

The 316th death involved a 49-year-old man who sought treatment at Miri Hospital due to shortness of breath. The case began to experience symptoms of cough, fever and difficulty in breathing three days prior. The rT-PCR test conducted on May 22 was positive. His condition deteriorated and he was confirmed dead on June 3. His comorbidity was obesity.

As for the new cases, Kuching topped the list with 167 cases, followed by Sibu (115), Miri (113), Sri Aman (50), Kapit (43), Bintulu (40), Samarahan (32), Subis (27), Mukah (19), Selangau (18), Beluru (18), Kanowit (8), Lundu (8), Meradong (7), Kabong (5), Asajaya (5), Lubok Antu (4), Dalat (4), Bau (3), Sarikei (3), Tanjung Manis (3), Lawas (2), Sebauh (2), Tatau (2), Serian (2), Matu (2), Song (1), Simunjan (1), Julau (1) and Limbang (1).

“Out of the 706 new cases reported, 47 showed signs and experienced symptoms of Covid-19 infection during the screening.

“A total of 599 cases comprised individuals who have been given quarantine orders at designated quarantine centres,” it said.

From the new cases, 557 cases are results of screening individuals who had contact with positive cases and all are asymptomatic.

A total of 60 cases are from other screenings at healthcare centres and they are also asymptomatic, while 47 cases are from screening symptomatic individuals at healthcare centres.

Meanwhile, 39 cases are individuals screened from currently active infection clusters and none of them had symptoms.

There are three imported case of returnees from other states in the country, all asymptomatic.

SDMC said that there were 603 cases of recovery and discharge for the day.

“As of today, 40,968 or 82.07 per cent of total cases have recovered and were discharged,” it said.

SDMC said that a total of 8,525 cases are still being treated at hospitals and various PKRC throughout the state.

There were 706 new Person-Under-Investigation (PUI) reported for the day, bringing the cumulative total of PUIs to 63,106 to-date.

As for Person-Under-Surveillance (PUS), there were 450 individuals who have checked into designated quarantine centres for their compulsory quarantine today. This brings the total of current PUS to 5,696 individuals at 105 hotels and non-hotel quarantine centres statewide.

To-date, those who have completed their quarantine period numbered at 111,461.
