Covid-19: 2 deaths, 651 new cases in Sarawak

KUCHING (June 5): Sarawak today recorded two deaths from Covid-19 along with 651 new positive cases, said the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) in a statement.

The figures brought the total death toll in the state to 318, and the cumulative total of positive cases to 50,571 cases.

The 317th death was a 62-year-old woman who had difficulty in breathing for a day before she sought treatment at a health clinic. The case was found unconscious on the way to the clinic. She was found lifeless upon arrival and was confirmed dead on May 30. She was brought to Miri Hospital for forensic investigation. The rT-PCR test conducted on May 30 was found positive. She had comorbidities of hypertension and dyslipidemia.

The 318th death was a 65-year-old woman who had sought treatment at Miri Hospital for shortness of breath. The case had experienced symptoms of cough and difficulty in breathing over the past three days. The rT-PCR test conducted on May 23 was found positive. Her condition worsened and she was confirmed dead on June 3. She had comorbidity of hypertension.

As for new cases for the day, SDMC said that Kuching led with triple-digit cases of 146, followed by Sibu (75), Sebauh (57), Miri (53), Meradong (36), Subis (35), Bintulu (30), Dalat (24), Kapit (22), Pakan (21), Bau (20), Asajaya (20), Serian (15), Tatau (15), Samarahan (13), Song (11), Sri Aman (9), Sarikei (9), Kabong (7), Telang Usan (6), Tebedu (5), Lubok Antu (4), Pusa (3), Betong (3), Selangau (3), Mukah (3), Bukit Mabong (2), Kanowit (2), Lundu (1) and Saratok (1).

“A total of 331 or 50.84 per cent of today’s cases were detected in Kuching, Sibu, Sebauh and Miri districts,” it said.

Out of the 651 new cases reported, 62 showed signs and experienced symptoms of Covid-19 infection during the screening.

A total of 524 cases comprised individuals who were given quarantine orders at designated quarantine centres.

From the new cases, 404 cases are results of screening individuals who had contact with positive cases, and all were asymptomatic.

Another 118 cases are individuals screened from currently active infection clusters and none of them had symptoms either.

Meanwhile, 65 cases are from other screenings at healthcare centres and they are also asymptomatic, while 62 cases are from screening symptomatic individuals at healthcare centres.

There are two imported case of returnees from other states in the country, and all are asymptomatic.

SDMC said that there were 440 recovery and discharged cases, bringing the total tally of recoveries to 41,404 or 81.87 per cent of total cases.

A total of 8,736 cases are still being treated at hospitals and various PKRC throughout the state.

There were 651 new Person-Under-Investigation (PUI) reported today, bringing the cumulative total of PUIs to 63,200 to-date.

As for Person-Under-Surveillance (PUS), there were 354 individuals who have checked into designated quarantine centres for their compulsory quarantine today. This brings the total of current PUS to 5,562 individuals at 105 hotels and non-hotel quarantine centres statewide.

To-date, those who have completed their quarantine period numbered at 111,946.
