Kapit man gets one day in jail, RM10,000 fine for drink driving in Sibu

SIBU (June 9): A Magistrates’ Court here today sentenced a 35-year-old man to one day in prison and an RM10,000 fine in default three months’ jail for driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Magistrate Mohd Syukri Mokhtar convicted Alan Chin Wei Qin from Kapit on his own guilty plea to a charge under Section 45A (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333).

Mohd Syukri also ordered for Chin’s driving licence to be suspended for two years from the date of his conviction.

On May 22 at around 8.48pm, Chin had a blood alcohol level of 53mg per 100ml, exceeding the prescribed limit of 50mg per 100ml, while driving at Jalan Dr Wong Soon Kai here.

Chin settled the fine.

In the same courtroom, Mohd Syukri sentenced Mohamad Helman Hata, 39, from Kampung Sentosa, to one day in jail and an RM10,000 fine in default six months’ jail for drink driving.

He pleaded guilty to committing the offence around 9pm on May 25 at Jalan Wong King Huo here.

He was found with a blood alcohol level of 101mg per 100ml, well above the prescribed limit of 50mg per 100ml.

Mohamad Helman was convicted under Section 45A (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333/87), which provides for a maximum two years in jail, a fine of up to RM30,000, as well as losing the qualification to hold or to get a driving licence for not less than two years from the date of conviction.

Mohamad Helman did not pay the fine.
