Significant drop in new Covid-19 cases for Sarawak with 419 recorded today

KUCHING (June 9): Sarawak recorded a significant drop in new Covid-19 positive cases with 419 reported today compared to 707 cases yesterday, said the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).

In its Covid-19 daily update, the committee said the state also registered three deaths, which brought the death toll from the virus in Sarawak to 330.

“A total of 294 cases or 70.17 per cent of today’s cases were detected in five districts, namely Kuching, Bintulu, Sri Aman, Sibu, and Lubok Antu,” SDMC said, adding that the latest cases brought the state’s cumulative number of infections to 53,000.

Kuching again recorded the highest number of cases at 124, followed by Bintulu (89), Sri Aman (28), Sibu (27), Lubok Antu (26), Subis (16), Miri (15), Kapit (13), Samarahan (12), Song (11), and Asajaya (11).

There were also 16 districts which recorded single-digit cases — Selangau (6), Matu (6), Bau (4), Tatau (4), Kanowit (3), Serian (3), Lawas (3), Tebedu (3), Sebauh (3), Sarikei (2), Lundu (2), Meradong (2), Dalat (2), Beluru (2), Kabong (1), and Bukit Mabong (1).

The committee said 47 of the 419 cases today showed signs and symptoms of Covid-19 infection during screenings.

“There were also 343 cases detected from individuals who were instructed to be quarantined at quarantine centres,” it said.

SDMC said there were 266 cases detected from screenings of individuals with contact to positive cases; 73 cases from screenings of individuals from existing active clusters; 49 cases from other screenings at health facilities; and 27 cases from screenings of symptomatic individuals at health facilities.

There were also four cases involving individuals who had returned from other states in the country.

On the death cases, the committee said two were recorded in Kapit involving male victims aged 66 and 79.

“The 66-year-old victim was found positive on May 25 and he had comorbidities of hypertension and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, while the 79-year-old victim, who had hypertension and chronic kidney disease, had tested positive on May 24,” it said.

SDMC said the third fatality reported today was a 66-year-old woman from Sibu.

“The victim, who died at Sibu Hospital, had tested positive on May 28. She also had a history of hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia,” said the committee.

SDMC said 462 cases recovered today of which 111 were discharged from Miri Hospital and the quarantine and low-risk patients treatment centre (PKRC); 105 from Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) and PKRC; 98 from Bintulu Hospital and PKRC; 55 from Sri Aman Hospital and PKRC; 42 from Sibu Hospital and PKRC; 16 from Betong PKRC; 15 from Sarikei Hospital and PKRC; 12 from Kapit Hospital and PKRC; five from Mukah PKRC; and three from Serian PKRC.

“The total number of recoveries in the state have now increased to 43,363 or 81.82 per cent out of the overall cases,” it said.

The committee also said 9,191 patients were still being isolated and treated at hospitals and PKRCs throughout Sarawak — 2,597 at SGH; 1,733 at Miri Hospital; 1,518 at Bintulu Hospital; 1,288 at Sibu Hospital and PKRC; 858 at Kapit Hospital and PKRC; 369 at Sri Aman Hospital; 317 at Sarikei Hospital; 254 at Mukah PKRC; 131 at Betong PKRC; 98 at Serian PKRC; 19 at Lawas PKRC; and nine at Limbang Hospital.

A total of 419 new person under investigation (PUI) cases were also reported with none awaiting lab test results.
