Covid-19: 4 deaths, 569 new cases; Sibu and Kuching record triple-digit cases

KUCHING (June 12): A total of four Covid-19 fatalities and 569 new cases were recorded in Sarawak today, with Sibu and Kuching districts reporting triple-digit cases, said the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).

In its daily update, the committee said this brought the state’s death toll to 346 and the cumulative tally of cases to 54,899.

The fatalities were reported in Kapit, Sibu and Meradong.

SDMC said 371 cases or 65.20 per cent of the new cases were detected in Sibu, Kuching, Kapit, Miri and Bintulu.

Sibu reported the highest number of cases at 149 followed by Kuching (110), Kapit (44), Miri (41), Bintulu (27), Samarahan (26), Tatau (22), Mukah (19), Bukit Mabong (17), Pakan (17), Serian, (16), Marudi (12), Subis (9), Sarikei (9), Julau (7), Song (7), Tebedu, (7), Selangau (5), Bau (4), Asajaya (4), Lawas (4), Meradong (4), Beluru (3), Kanowit (3), Belaga (2) and Sri Aman (1).

The 343rd fatality involved an 84-year-old woman who passed away in the Kapit Hospital. She had thyroid cancer and tested positive for Covid-19 on June 8.

The 344th fatality involved a 71-year-old woman who also passed away in the Kapit Hospital. She had comorbidities of hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidemia, and tested positive on June 10.

The 345th fatality involved a 73-year-old man who passed away in the Sibu Hospital. He tested positive on June 10 and had comorbidities of hypertension, dyslipidemia and gout.

The 346th fatality involved a 66-year-old man who passed away in the Sarikei Hospital. He had comorbidities of hypertension and diabetes, and was tested positive on May 31.

Of the new cases reported, SDMC said 97 individuals had shown signs and symptoms of Covid-19 at the time of screening.

It added that 397 of them had been issued the quarantine order.

“Among the new cases, 350 had close contact with previous cases, 45 cases involved with the presently active clusters and two cases were imported from other states.”

SDMC said a total of 346 new recoveries and discharged cases were reported today, bringing the state’s cumulative number of such cases to 44,720 or 81.46 per cent of the infections tally.

“A total of 9,717 individuals are still being treated and isolated at the Quarantine and Low-risk Treatment Centre (PKRC) and hospital ward,” it added.
