SIBU (June 16): Efforts to tackle Covid-19 will be in vain if the people continue to disregard the standard operating procedures (SOPs) set to curb the spread of the virus, Bintulu Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said.

He added based on the records obtained, most of the recent cases of Covid-19 infection in Bintulu division occurred in the workplace, including residential areas and rental houses.

“Rental houses continue to record lots of Covid-19 transmission and this is indeed a worrying scenario,” he pointed out in a statement yesterday,
He said what was regrettable was the detection of rental house owners who failed to follow the SOPs set, especially those involving the entry and exit of tenants so as to curb the spread of the virus.

He warned the owners of the rental houses involved that stern action would be taken against them for not complying with the SOPs.

He further pointed out that these rental house owners tend to take the matter lightly, which could derail the efforts to battle Covid-19 and flatten the curve.

He said the efforts carried out by the Bintulu Division Disaster Management Committee (BDDMC), including the Ministry of Health and other related agencies, to reduce the infection rate in Bintulu division would be in vain if there are still many industrial companies and businesses that do not comply with the SOPs.

“Ideally, every employer should ensure that each of their employees complies with the SOPs, including conducting MySejahtera scans and encouraging at least 70 per cent of their employees to work from home.”
