KOTA KINABALU: Sabah recorded 759 dengue cases, including two deaths as of June 10 this year, the fourth highest in Malaysia after Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Johor.

There are currently 11 active cases in Sabah, said Sabah Health Department director Datuk Dr Christina Rundi in a statement on Wednesday.

“So far, there are two death cases in Semporna and Tawau.

“Dengue cases in Sabah is showing a continuous declining trend since 2020. The decrease this year was 68 per cent compared to the same period last year.

“This decline is indeed something we celebrate, yet we cannot be complacent,” she said.

Rundi also said that the decline was due to many factors, including controlled movement during the Covid-19 pandemic, as there is presence of occupants in the house and the lack of garbage due to human activities and so on.

However, the Health Department is expecting the number of dengue cases to rise again after the movement control order is lifted.

“Therefore, we need to implement sustainable and continuous prevention activities to ensure that this downward trend continues,” she added.

Rundi issued the statement in conjunction with the ASEAN Dengue Day that was celebrated on June 15.

In the statement, Rundi also called on the people of Sabah to take up the challenge of preventing and destroying breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes with the new norm approach of self-cleaning the environment for 10 minutes every week.
