Covid-19: 5 deaths, 569 new cases in Sarawak today

KUCHING (June 19): Sarawak recorded five Covid-19 deaths and 569 new positive cases today, said the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).

This brings the state’s total death toll to 378 and the cumulative tally of positive cases to 59,139 cases.

Two deaths were recorded in Kuching and Sibu respectively, while one was recorded in Kanowit.

“The 374th and 375th death involved two women aged 46 and 80 from Sibu, both who were confirmed dead at Sibu Hospital. The 46-year-old woman was found positive on June 17 and the 80-year-old was found positive on May 23.

“The former had comorbidities of high blood, diabetes, dyslipidemia and obesity while the latter had high blood, diabetes, chronic kidney disease and chronic obstructive lung disease,” SDMC said.

The 376th death involved another woman, aged 55 from Kanowit, who was was found positive on June 10 and was confirmed dead at Sibu Hospital. She had comorbidity of dyslipidemia.

The deaths in Kuching involved men aged 84 and 87 who were confirmed dead at Sarawak General Hospital here.

The 84-year-old was found positive on June 18 and had comorbidities of high blood and diabetes. The 87-year-old was found positive on June 14. Both deaths were related to the Iris Garden cluster here.

On the positive cases, SDMC said 361 out of the total number of positive cases recorded today were detected in Sibu with 131 cases, Sarikei (83), Kuching (74), Bintulu (47) and Kapit (26).

Simunjan recorded 23 cases, Meradong (22), Miri (22), Kanowit (18), Serian (16), Mukah (16), Samarahan (14), Subis (11), Selangau (11), Sri Aman (8), Lundu (8), Bau (7), Telang Usan (7), Tatau (6), Pakan (4), Marudi (4), Tebedu (3), Bukit Mabong (3), Pusa (1), Asajaya (1), Lawas (1), Dalat (1) and Song (1).

“Out of the 569 new positive cases today, 358 cases were individuals who were in close contacts with positive cases (with three of them exhibiting symptoms); 124 cases involve screening of individuals in existing clusters (cases were asymptomatic); 52 were other screenings at health facilities (cases were asymptomatic); and 35 involve screenings of individuals exhibiting symptoms at health facilities,” SDMC said.

On a positive note, there are 550 new cases that have recovered and discharged from the hospitals, bringing the total recoveries and discharges to 48,682.

“The total active cases currently being isolated and treated at hospital wards and PKRCs stands at 9,951.

“There are also new 569 persons-under-investigation (PUI) recorded today,” the committee said.
