MIRI (June 21): Marudi police are looking for the next of kin of a 20-year-old woman who died of complications while receiving treatment at Miri Hospital after she was allegedly set on fire by a male companion.

District police chief DSP Jo Hang said the victim had only verbally identified herself as ‘Sila Gani’, a Bidayuh from Serian, and no personal document was found on her.

He said in a statement that the victim was taken to Long Lama health clinic on May 30 this year after she suffered burns to 30 per cent of her body.

“She was believed to have been splashed with diesel before being set on fire by her companion. She was then referred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Miri Hospital for further treatment,” said Jo.

The incident allegedly took place at Long Banyok in Baram.

On June 6, Marudi police arrested a suspect under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt.

However, the police have since reclassified the case as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code after the victim died on June 15 at around 4.40pm.

Anyone with information about the victim or her next of kin can contact Marudi CID chief ASP George Shua Apau at 019-6588968 or investigating officer Inspector Shah Effendi Abdul Lam at 019-2612189.
