Jobless man jailed three years for attempted murder of police officer

The accused is led from the courtroom after sentencing.

KUCHING (June 22): An unemployed man was sentenced to three years in prison by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for attempting to kill a police officer, among other offences.

Mizi Mohamad, 24, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali to the first charge framed under Section 307(1) of the Penal Code, with trying to kill ASP Mohd Fauzi Mohammat by swinging a machete at the victim who was within a metre of him.

He committed the act on May 31, 2021 at 12.30pm near Jalan Bako here.

The accused also pleaded guilty a second charge framed under Section 427 of the Penal Code, with damaging a police patrol vehicle to the tune of RM3,000 at the same place and time, on the same day.

He also pleaded guilty to another charge under Section 506 of the Penal Code, with threatening to injure his father at 9am on May 31, 2021 at Kampung Hijrah, Jalan Bako.

The court sentenced the accused to three years’ jail for the first charge, and one year each for the second and third charges, with the sentences to run concurrently from the date of arrest which was on May 31.

According to the facts of the case, police received a call from the public at about 11.23am, stating that a man armed with a machete was running amok and threatening to kill a family member.

Police personnel led by Mohd Fauzi arrived at the scene in two patrol cars and attempted to persuade the accused who was trying to attack his neighbours.

The accused however suddenly rushed towards Mohd Fauzi and swung the machete at him, prompting the office to react in self-defence by shooting the accused’s legs.

The accused was reported to be in stable condition after receiving hospital treatment for injuries to both legs.
