KUCHING (June 23): Sarawak has recorded three more deaths and 577 new cases due to Covid-19 today, said the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).

In a statement, the committee said two deaths were reported at Sarikei Hospital and one at Sibu Hospital.

“The Covid-19 death reported at Sibu Hospital involved a 52-year-old man from Selangau and he was tested positive on May 28,” it said, adding the deceased had a history of from high blood pressure, diabetes and chronic kidney disease.

For the second death reported today, the committee said it involved a 74-year-old woman from Sarikei and she was tested positive on June 18.

The deceased also suffered from high blood pressure, diabetes, dyslipidaemia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and heart disease.

The third death involved an 80-year-old man from Pakan who was tested positive on June 20.

SDMC said the deceased, who passed away at Sarikei Hospital, had a history of high blood pressure, diabetes. and chronic kidney diseases.

As for new cases reported today, Kuching is on top of the list with 145 cases followed by Pakan (45), Bintulu (40), Kanowit (39), Meradong (31), Tatau (30), Sibu (27), Miri (26), Kapit (22), Lundu (19), Sri Aman (17), Serian (17), Mukah (15), Tebedu (14), Sarikei (14), Bau (13), Pusa (8), Song (8), Subis (7), Selangau (6), Samarahan (6), Kabong (5), Matu (4), Asajaya (4), Julau (4), Telang Usan (3), Simunjan (2), Bukit Mabong (2), Betong (1), Sebauh (1), Lawas (1) and Lubok Antu (1).

A total of 300 or 51.99 per cent of the new cases are concentrated in the districts of Kuching, Pakan, Bintulu, Kanowit and Meradong, the committee says.

The cumulative positive cases in the state was 61,566 and a death toll of 392.

“From the 577 new cases, 56 patients exhibited symptoms associated with Covid-19 when the screenings were conducted.”

It pointed out a total of 487 of the new cases were detected when the patients were undergoing quarantine order and 297 of them were close contact of previously identified positive patients, with 17 of them showing symptoms.

Another 190 cases were related to existing Covid-19 clusters with four of them showing symptoms, the committee says.

“A total of 55 cases were detected during other screenings at health facilities while another 35 cases were detected during screenings of symptomatic patients at health facilities.”

On new recoveries reported today, the committee said 609 new recoveries and discharged were reported, with Bintulu Hospital and its Covid-19 low-risk treatment and quarantine centre (PKRC) leading with 123 patients discharged.

This was followed by Sarawak General Hospital and PKRC with 118 new recoveries, Sri Aman Hospital and PKRC (87), Miri Hospital and PKRC (86), Sibu Hospital and PKRC (75), Sarikei Hospital and PKRC (74), Kapit Hospital and PKRC (31), Mukah PKRC (nine), Betong PKRC (4) and Serian PKRC (2).

“The latest recoveries have brought the total number of Covid-19 patients discharged from hospitals to 50,766 or 82.46 per cent of the overall positive cases in the state.”

Currently, the committee said 9,857 patients were still receiving treatments in hospitals and PKRC.

Sarawak General Hospital and its PKRC are currently treating 2,888 patients, Sibu Hospital and PKRC (1,944), Bintulu Hospital (1,368), Miri Hospital (1,287), Limbang Hospital (two), Sarikei Hospital (441), Kapit Hospital and PKRC (930), Betong PKRC (114), Mukah PKRC (344), Serian PKRC (151), Lawas PKRC (14) and Sri Aman Hospital (374).

It said 103 patients were being warded in intensive care units and 29 of them required intubation.

A total of 582 patient-under-investigation (PUI) was reported today and none of them were still pending laboratory results.

“A total of 250 person-under-surveillance (PUS) have also registered to be quarantined at 104 quarantine centres across the state today, with 5,325 people currently under quarantine.”

On a separate note, the committee said the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs had carried out 168 inspections today and 47 compounds were issued since May 13 this year.
