KUCHING (June 25): Sarawak Sukma Contingent athletes and officials bound for Sukma Johor 2022 will be vaccinated soon under the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme.

Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said they wrote to the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) last week to request priority vaccination.

“Our facility Stadium Perpaduan has been used as a vaccination centre and we can just bring them over when we get the green light from SDMC,” he told a press conference after visiting the vaccination centre  (PPV) for the tourism sector at the Christian Ecumenical Worship Centre today.

He said many of the athletes are still young and yet to be in the queue to be called for vaccination.

“We hope that we can get the green light from SDMC so that the sports associations can arrange for the athletes and officials to come for the vaccination.

“We should be getting some kind of green light or feedback from SDMC soon,” he said.

Among those present were federal Minister of Tourism Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri; state Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture permanent secretary Hii Chang Kee; Tourism Malaysia Sarawak director Suria Charles Buas; and Sarawak Tourism Federation president Audry Wan Ullok.

Earlier in the week, Abdul Karim had said the Sarawak contingent bound for Sukma Johor 2022 should be given priority under the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme.

This is to enable the normal training programmes and preparations by the respective sports teams to proceed after athletes and officials are vaccinated.
