MIRI (Nov 19): PKR Baram calls on some community leaders not to bar certain candidates or their agents from entering their villages or longhouses.

In a statement yesterday, PKR Sarawak vice-chairman Roland Enggan said there is freedom of movement and political preference of people in a democratic country, and longhouse chiefs should not be made use of for narrow agenda of some political parties.

He said this in response to a banner put up at the entrance of two longhouses in Sungai Arang, Bakong, barring entry of those not from GPS from entering their longhouses.

“GPS has already been given the opportunity to rule for five years and the mandate has ended. GPS is no longer the government of Sarawak anymore. There is only a caretaker government until the next government is formed after the election,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Roland, who is also PKR Baram chairman, said now is the time for Sarawakians to listen to what political parties have to say.

He added that GPS was not empowered by any law to stop any quarters from speaking to the people nor dictate any longhouse chiefs to follow their wishes.

He said those affected by such notice could report to the relevant authorities.

Roland called on GPS to clarify they were not involved with putting up such notice, which could potentially cause chaos and unease among the people.
