SARIKEI (Nov 30): The state government under Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) has always considered agriculture as a means to improve the socioeconomic status of the community, said Assistant Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datu Len Salleh Talif.

“This is in line with the state government’s acknowledgement of the agriculture industry as a catalyst for the country’s economic growth, and a means to prosper the people of Sarawak,” he said when officiating the Agriculture Community Outreach Programme (AgriCOP) at the Kampung Seberang Multipurpose Hall here today.

The programme was organised by the Sarikei district Agriculture Department.

He added that AgriCOP was one of the initiatives undertaken by the government through the Agriculture Department to impart knowledge which can contribute towards increasing the income of the people, especially the farming community.

“For instance, some 50 people from places like Bukit Kinyau, Selalang, Sare, Kerapa and nearby villages participated in the programme, which provides a platform for the participants to learn food processing technology and other useful knowledge.

“Today, the participants learnt how to process chilli-flavoured pineapple sauce, which is synonymous with Sarikei as a ‘pineapple town’,” he said.

Among those present at the programme today were Sarikei Division Agriculture Officer Rainy Yaman, Temenggong Awang Ibrahim Awang Hosain and local community leaders.
