KUCHING (Dec 20): The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS)’s victory in the 12th state election is nothing to be proud off, says Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) president Voon Lee Shan.

Voon, whose party lost all 73 seats it contested in the polls, noted that the voters’ turnout in most constituencies was very low, with some registering down to 30 per cent from the total electorate.

He also claimed that the GPS took control of the whole situation.

“They (GPS) had exploited the Covid-19 situation giving money and food aid to the people, and showing photos of ministers and YBs (elected representatives) deliver food items to people during campaigning,” he said in a statement here yesterday.

Moreover, Voon also criticised GPS for ‘having transportation privileges in running their campaign’.

“They could use helicopters; they used the Pan Borneo (Highway) as ‘airports’ to land and fly their helicopters.

“We could not, because of Covid-19 SOP (standard operating procedures),” he said.

Voon said despite PBK’s loss this time, one thing that he and fellow party members could be proud off was that they were able to gather their candidates for this 12th state election, where he stood in Batu Lintang as a candidate – he lost in the five-cornered fight where Parti Sarawak Bersatu’s See Chee How emerged victorious, but with a very narrow 93-vote majority.

See garnered 4,420 votes, GPS’ Sih Hua Tong polled 4,327 votes, Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s Cherishe Ng received 1,823 votes, Voon got 1,570 votes, and Parti Aspirasi Rakyat Sarawak’s Leong Shaow Tung had 187 votes.
