A fireman with help from local villagers is seen dousing the flames that engulf a wooden house in Kampung Baru.

BINTULU (Feb 27): Several families were left homeless after their wooden house in Kampung Baru was razed by fire this afternoon.

Fire and Rescue Department Bintulu chief Wan Kamarudin Wan Ahmad said two fire engines were dispatched to the scene after a distress call was received at 1.12pm.

“There were two houses involved. The house owner and his family members lived in the first house while the second house was rented out to other tenants,” he said.

He added that both houses were completely gutted but no reports of injuries were received.

It is believed that the fire was started from one of the units that was rented out to other tenants.

Villagers were able to salvage only a few items from the two houses due to the strong wind causing the flames to rapidly engulf both structures.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) Bintulu officer Lt (PA) Ra’idah Jomi said food kits from the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) were distributed to the affected families this afternoon.
