MIRI (May 19): A Bekenu longhouse resident ran amok and threatened his mother with a machete yesterday.

Miri police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu confirmed receiving a report on the incident from the 25-year-old’s mother, who escaped unhurt, at the Bekenu police station.

It is understood that the man swung a 57cm-long machete at his mother, shocking the other residents.

Alexson said a Miri Criminal Investigation Department team arrested the suspect on the side of a road in Bekenu town.

“The arrest was made around 12.15pm,” he said.

Police found and confiscated the machete, believed to have been used in the incident, as a case exhibit.

Alexson said the case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation.

The suspect is currently under remand in police custody under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code to facilitate the investigation.
