KUCHING (July 28): The Housewives’ Social Security (HSS) Bill 2022, passed by a voice vote in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday has brought much glad sense of relief among housewives and single-mothers.
For housewife Veronica Aju Linggih, 47, the HSS Bill brings assurance and comfort to her.

“I have been a housewife for almost all my life having to care for my husband and seven children. Even at home, accidents do happen and at least I have the insurance scheme to fall back on, in case of accidents or death in the family,” she said.
For 54-year-old single mother June Angking, the passing of the HSS Bill is deemed beneficial for the homemakers, especially the single mothers.

“Being a single mother and a homemaker, the Bill is a great help, especially so when it covers medical benefits and other compensation payments. Personally, I would encourage more mothers and housewives to contribute to this voluntary insurance protection,” said June who has two daughters.
Patricia Charles, 44, whose husband has passed on in 2019, said the Bill is much awaited as she thinks that its monthly contribution is very much affordable as compared to getting other insurance policies.

“For now, I am still receiving my late husband’s pension from Socso (Social Security Organisation). For me personally, having to contribute only RM10 per month or RM120 per year is reasonable as I still have a daughter to care for.
“Imagine, at my age, it is very expensive to get an insurance policy these days. I am trying to put food on the table for my small family and to get an insurance policy is not viable at all for me. This HSS Bill is definitely timely,” said Patricia who is running an online food business.
Housewife Hartanty Hardi, 44, applauded the passing of the HSS Bill as it gives her a sense of protection and assurance.

“I strongly support the Bill because we do not know what the future holds. This insurance scheme provides a sense of relief in times of need, especially when one does not have much savings,” said the mother of three.
The passing of HSS Bill 2022 in the Dewan Rakyat and the voluntary insurance scheme would cover around three million housewives below the age of 55.
In the Dewan Rakyat yesterday, Deputy Human Resources Minister Datuk Awang Hashim said husbands would have to pay RM120 in advance to Socso to provide protection for their wives over a period of 12 months and that housewives could also choose to make their own contributions should their husbands decide not to sign up for the scheme.
