KUCHING (Aug 23): Datuk Liwan Lagang has called for Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang to be barred from entering Sarawak for life.

The Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) vice president said this follows Abdul Hadi’s extremist remarks, including views that appear to demonise non-Muslims and non-Bumiputeras.

“He (Abdul Hadi) is not worthy to be a president of a party championing religion. He is supposed to unite and spread the message of love, care, and unity,” said the Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunication.

“I would like to recommend to the Sarawak government that he (Abdul Hadi) be barred for life from entering Sarawak as this Land of the Hornbills should not welcome such awful characters to our shores.”

Liwan said Abdul Hadi should have instead emulated Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s understanding and respect for all religions and races.

The Belaga assemblyman recalled Abdul Hadi had even previously insinuated that the Dayak community were either stupid or uncivilised because they wore cawat (loin cloth).

“During the Batang Ai by-election in 2009, Abdul Hadi insulted the Ibans by calling them loincloth-wearing voters who did not know how to vote when blaming them for (the then) Pakatan Rakyat’s loss in that April state by-election,” he said.

Liwan called on Abdul Hadi to look himself in the mirror when acting like a loose cannon and change his behaviour to become a father figure who unites all Malaysians.

He also requested Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob censor and strip Abdul Hadi of his special envoy post to the Middle East.

Liwan pointed out corruption is not associated with any race or religion as it is a social disease that must be nipped in the bud and eradicated holistically.

He stressed Abdul Hadi’s sweeping statement is not only demeaning to non-Muslims and non-Bumiputeras but also baseless without statistics to back it up.

On Aug 20, Abdul Hadi posted on Facebook that non-Muslims and non-Bumiputeras made up the bulk of what he called the “roots of corruption”.

He claimed these groups who chase illicit gains are the ones who eventually control the economy.
