Police fire tear gas to disperse political supporters outside the nomination centre for the Tenom parliamentary constituency at Dewan DSP Antanom.

TENOM (Nov 5): Police were forced to fire tear gas to disperse a group of political supporters outside the nomination centre for the Tenom parliamentary constituency at Dewan DSP Antanom here.

The incident is believed to have happened, when the group – allegedly from Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (KDM) – had caused a disturbance at the nomination centre.

The supporters were said to be dissatisfied with the rejection of KDM president Datuk Peter Anthony’s nomination as a candidate for the seat by the returning officer.

They were also seen pushing through the Light Strike Force personnel on duty at the scene.

Police were forced to fire tear gas to disperse the rowdy crowd when they apparently refused to back off and stop their commotion.

Peter however managed to run into the centre amid the chaos and remained inside with his lawyer to argue against the rejection.

Videos of the incident had gone viral in social media showing supporters running away from the nomination center to a nearby field.

Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department chief Datuk Seri Hazani Ghazali when contacted confirmed the incident, saying that it happened after the nomination paper of one of the candidates was rejected by the Election Commission (EC) for certain reasons.

“Police were forced to act and to take control of the situation to maintain public order,” he said, adding that no untoward incident has been reported following the incident.
