KOTA KINABALU (Jan 31): A self-employed man was sentenced to 20 years’ jail plus 13 strokes of the rattan by the Sessions Court here on Tuesday for raping his girlfriend’s daughter five years ago.
Judge Elsie Primus meted out the sentence on Richard @ Rich Jawi, 60, after the judge ruled that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
Apart from the two sentences, the court also ordered Richard to be placed under police supervision for two years after completing his sentence.
His application for a stay was dismissed by the court and he was ordered to serve his jail term from yesterday.
Richard was found guilty of raping the 17-year-old victim whom he knew is a disabled girl, at a house in Penampang on February 25, 2018.
He was convicted under Section 376(2)(k) of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to 30 years and whipping, upon conviction.
The prosecution had called seven witnesses to testify against the accused, who was defended by counsel Petrene Susanna Peter and the defence produced three witnesses, including the accused.
