KOTA SAMARAHAN (Jan 31): A senior citizen died in front of the Asajaya District Office near here yesterday after his motorcycle crashed into a pole – one of several dragged down by a cement truck which had moments earlier caught some overhead telecommunication cables while passing through the area.

The victim, aged 74, was pronounced dead at the scene, said a Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) spokesman in a statement.

“A cement truck that passed that section had caught some overhead telecommunication cables, causing them to become stuck on the heavy vehicle, and in the process dragged down several poles along the stretch.

“The cement truck only managed to come to a halt after dragging the cables for several metres. This uprooted some of the poles along the road. The victim crashed into one of the poles, while a few others fell on a passing car,” said the spokesman.

Bomba confirmed having received an emergency call at 3.15pm and immediately despatched firefighters from the Asajaya station to the scene.

After obtaining permission from the telecommunication company, firefighters proceeded to cut the cables and moved the fallen poles away from the road.

The operation ended at 4.32pm after the firefighters made sure that the area no longer posed danger to the road users.

It was informed that the body had been sent to the hospital for further action.
