Julau woman fined RM4,000 after pleading guilty to two counts of drug abuse

MIRI (Feb 6): A 39-year-old woman was fined RM4,000 in default three months’ imprisonment by the Magistrate’s Court here today after she pleaded guilty to two counts of abusing amphetamine and methamphetamine.

Magistrate Nazira Adlin Ahmad Khairul Razi, who meted out the sentence against Agnes Ulak from Sungai Sebirah, Julau, also ordered her to be placed under police supervision for two years.

Agnes was charged under Section 15 (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (ADB) 1952, which is punishable under Section 15(1) of the same Act.

The Section provides for a fine of up to RM5,000, or up to two years in prison, or both, and supervision by an officer as required under Section 2 of the Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983 for a period of between two and three years.

Agnes was found to have abused amphetamine and methamphetamine, which are listed under the first schedule of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 (Act 234) at the Miri District Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department office at 2.30pm on April 8, 2021 and at 3.30pm on Nov 22, 2022.

For the first count, Agnes was fined RM1,800 in default one month’s imprisonment, while for the second count, she was fined RM2,200 in default two months in prison.

Insp Mudzilawati Abdul Rahman prosecuted the case while Agnes was unrepresented by a legal counsel.
