KUCHING (Feb 21): The political development, modernisation and stability shaped through former Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud’s leadership are a legacy that has laid a crucial foundation for the state’s current transformation in the new economy, said chief political secretary to the Premier, Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman.

In a statement, Fazzrudin said the late Taib made significant contributions to the establishment of Malaysia and the development of Sarawak as a minister in the first Cabinet of the state government in 1963.

“Tun Taib also played a crucial role in modernising Sarawak as the Chief Minister for 33 years by introducing development-oriented politics.

“During his tenure, he successfully ensured that Sarawak not only developed as a territory within the Malaysian federation but also safeguarded and nurtured relations among its diverse communities,” he said.

The Tupong assemblyman also said Taib’s passing is a significant loss for the nation, especially for Sarawak.

“Tun Taib’s personality, dedication and service to the state, country and community as a statesman should serve as an example to the people of Sarawak and he will be missed.

“I am confident that the legacy left by Tun Taib will continue to be upheld by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and the leaders of the state government for Sarawak’s vision to become a developed and high-income state by 2030,” said Fazzrudin.

He then extended his condolences to Taib’s family.
