Three Chinese nationals claim trial to cheating 71-year-old Sibu woman of RM25,000, gold rings

SIBU (May 23): Three Chinese nationals claimed trial in the Magistrates’ Court here today to cheating and dishonestly inducing RM25,000 and three gold rings worth RM3,000 from a 71-year-old woman.

Zhang Huamei, 54; Qin Yuying, 52; and Zhang Jinhuo, 55; were each charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code read together with Section 34 of the same Code.

The Section provides for a minimum one year and maximum 10 years in prison, with caning, and a possible fine upon conviction.

According to the charge, the trio together with another suspect still at large cheated the senior citizen by dishonestly inducing her to deliver the cash and gold rings on May 6 at around 10am near the Sibu Civic Centre.

Magistrate Oon Kork Chern allowed bail of RM50,000 each along with two local sureties with an income of not less than RM2,000 a month.

Oon also ordered for their passports to be impounded and fixed July 17 for pre-trial case management.

The three accused were represented by defence counsel Stanley Ting while deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Amirul Hakim Mohamad Zamri handled the prosecution.
